The work of a genius that had the nerve to mock the church in the late sixties. Sei grande Fellini!

I’m italian and does anyone have any idea how difficult it was to even conceive of mocking the Holy Catholic church in the sixties? Everything that many perceive to be wrong with the catholic church is inside this film sequence: the pompousness, decadence, and the unresolved, haunting darkness of all that they preach. Fellini made some crap too, but this - this is the work of genius.

Not too much. Just enough.

This seriously just made my life. I’m in love.

That is exactly the point.Religion should be questioned constantly and boldly.Especially the ones with such a large following.Fellini never tried to reassure the Catholics in their own self importance.Seems like that’s what you would rather hear instead.Over and over again. How Insightful.

Wow! Fellini dropped too much acid back in the sixties!

I’m getting tired of all this nagging as soon as someone deprives a religion of its glamor. Just because it’s a religion doesn’t make it immune to criticism and ridicule… far from it, since religion is one of the foremost power sources in our society, it can and SHOULD be criticized by the arts. In fact, ALL major believes system, be it political or religious, should be “picked on”. It’s the basis of free thinking and the bane of dogmatism.

Yuck. Well, someone once said that people only mock what is true and magnificent, and it seems that this clip does just that.

If a similar thing were written only with the subject of ridicule changed, to Jewish, Muslim, or any other religion, there’d be hell to pay…

Not saying that any of those religions should be picked on at all…

But yeesh… if this is intelligent, an acorn is a coconut…

I quote from a recent post. Those who like his movies the most are,’Left-leaning intelligensia’?

When will people stop looking at movies with a magnifying glass so much.
They tend to miss the real details ;-)

This is the most inteligent thing I’ve ever seen.

I must admit, for a circus barker he did know what buttons to press with his audience. Those who like his movies the most are the Left-leaning intelligensia, who find justification for their own prejudices in his surreal mockery; amongst such people, there is considerable prestige in making as much as possible of Fellini flicks. “Artistry” and “genius” are words frequently used.

As for me, I never was much interested in his stuff. I’ve heard this sort of preaching before.

Scary to the core and it keeps going!!! The light-up bishops and the pope blazing out of the wall like some shrimpy Hindu god is fantastically weird.

Great scene from one of my favourite films. The music is based on Bach’s ‘Jesus Christus Espiritus’

One of the great moments in Fellini.
Still nowhere near as crazy as the church itself.
